(New York, NY)— The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) today applauded the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for the recent sanctions designations announced against senior Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (EMB) official Mahmoud al-Abyari, three other individuals and three entities that have been illegally providing material support to Hamas.

Said CEP CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace:

“We applaud OFAC and the Trump administration for these strong sanctions of Muslim Brotherhood affiliates and Hamas‑directed front organizations. The Treasury rightly designated the EMB, Egypt’s oldest and largest Islamist organization, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization earlier this year, and Mahmoud al-Abyari has served as an official in the EMB and other Muslim Brotherhood offshoots. 

“The EMB and others have a documented pattern of using sham charities and underground banking to channel money to Hamas and other terrorists. These sanctions are a great step to expose, punish, and curtail that.

“We are thankful to Secretary Bessent and the OFAC team for prioritizing this vital cause and encourage them to keep using the law to economically pressure and isolate violent extremists.”
