CEP Senior Advisor Ian Acheson writes: "Why did Gideon Falter cross the road? Or try to? That is a question that went viral this weekend. A video emerged of Falter, who leads the Campaign Against Antisemitism, being threatened by police for trying to cross a pro-Palestinian protest in central London. He was wearing a kippah and carrying a prayer shawl bag, and had reportedly just emerged from a synagogue with some friends and was trying to get home. Police officers had spotted him leaving the pavement on a collision course with protestors and intervened. A tense standoff unfolded, with an officer telling him in that his ‘openly Jewish’ appearance was ‘antagonising’ the crowd. A calamitous initial response by the Metropolitan Police which, in effect, said that being recognisably Jewish was ‘provocative’ compounded calls for the force’s beleaguered boss Sir Mark Rowley to resign."

“Unfortunately, what’s old is new again with anti-Semitism at its highest levels in the United States in decades. But now the bad guys don’t all wear recognizable brown shirts or white hoods anymore. Anti-Semites have changed their language and tactics in an attempt to legitimize their odious views,” said Lipowsky."

"Understanding Antisemitism" | CEP Senior Research Analyst Josh Lipowsky

On February 5, 2024, CEP Senior Research Analyst Josh Lipowsky led a course for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Penn State University entitled "Understanding Antisemitism."

Antisemitism is at its highest levels in the United States in decades, and the bad guys don’t all wear recognizable brown shirts and swastikas anymore. This course will give participants a better understanding of historic antisemitism and why it is on the rise now. Together we will look at how antisemitism has manifested in recent years while exploring common themes that have repeated throughout history, which will empower participants to recognize and confront it. Please note this course will be recorded for the instructor’s use and will be posted online with the Counter Extremism Project.

Instructor: Josh Lipowsky is the senior research analyst of the Counter Extremism Project, a New York–based NGO that researches and combats the spread of violent extremism. His focuses include antisemitism, white supremacy, and Iran-sponsored terrorism. He has a master’s in global affairs from New York University and bachelor’s degrees in journalism and Jewish studies from Penn State. His writing has been featured in the Jerusalem Post, Times of Israel, the Hill, Forbes, the New Jersey Jewish Standard, and New York Jewish Week, among other publications.

"'These images are horrible from a German perspective,' Hans-Jakob Schindler, a former diplomat in the Middle East and a director of the Counter Extremism Project, told The National. '
We all remember the black-and-white pictures from the 1930s. Having Stars of David on the walls of Jewish buildings ever again in Germany is something I wouldn’t have expected to be possible and really sends some shivers down my spine.'
...
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has long called for Germany to move on from its penance for the past, has expressed support for Israel, a stance which Mr Schindler said corresponds to far-right thought.

'The right-wing extremist scene does anti-Semitism in a much smarter way,' he said, 'that says "we have nothing against the Jews – as long as they are in Israel".'"

In Their Own Words:

We reiterate once again that the brigades will directly target US bases across the region in case the US enemy commits a folly and decides to strike our resistance fighters and their camps [in Iraq].
