On August 24, 2020, two explosions targeted Philippine security forces in Jolo, Sulu, killing 14 people and injuring at least 75 others. The perpetrators were believed to be female and widows of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) militants. Authorities blamed ASG, though ISIS issued a statement claiming responsibility. 

On August 25, 2017, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked a Hindu community in the village of Ah Nauk Kha Maung Seik in Maungdaw District, Myanmar. The extremist insurgents reportedly killed 99 Hindus.  

On August 19, 2021, at least three people were killed and 50 were injured when a roadside bomb struck a Shiite procession marking the 7th century death of Prophet Muhammad's grandson Hussein, a Shiite saint. Sunni extremists were suspected in the explosion in Bahawalnagar, Punjab province, Pakistan.

On August 16, 2020, a car bomb exploded outside the Elite Hotel in the Lido beach area of Mogadishu, allowing five al-Shabaab militants to storm the building. Somali security forces ended the siege after five hours of fighting, which left 18 dead and 25 wounded.   

On August 15, 2021, the Taliban entered the Afghanistan capital Kabul and took over the presidential palace hours after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. The Islamist group returned to power nearly twenty years after its regime fell in November 2001.
