Afghanistan Content Report

The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) regularly compiles the propaganda output of al-Qaeda and ISIS affiliates operating in Afghanistan to help inform the public understanding of the evolving terrorist dynamics in Afghanistan. CEP's Afghanistan Content Report series ensures this raw material is available to the wider expert and terrorism analyst community, including through a rough translation of the original texts into English, which can build long-term analysis of the development of the propaganda strategies of these groups and therefore support a thorough analysis of the terrorism threat.

Afghanistan Content Report: August 17–23, 2024

A Taliban vehicle was attacked on August 22 in Nangarhar, killing and wounding several. Explosions occurred in Kabul which were reported on August 17 and August 22. Shiites were killed by unknown individuals in Herat and Ghor. The United Arab Emirates officially recognized the Taliban ambassador. An accused spy for the Pakistani government was killed in Bajaur on August 17. The Taliban falsely claimed that ISIS-K has been defeated. Unconfirmed reports of the assassination of a Taliban leader on August 17. Allegations of fighting between Taliban factions in Baghlan on August 22.

Afghanistan Content Report: August 10–16, 2024

One person was killed and 13 injured in an attack on a bus in Kabul. ISIS claimed responsibility, asserting that they had killed Shiites. Taliban and Pakistani border guards fought in the Torkham area. The Taliban condemned a commander who advocated for violence against Shiites and criticized Iran. There were allegedly explosions in Kabul, reported on August 13. The Taliban invited a Pakistani Shiite political leader to attend ceremonies marking the third anniversary of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. 283 people, including women and children, have been killed in Panjshir Province since the Taliban takeover. The Pakistani government has alleged that some of the money stolen in armored car robberies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been given to terrorist entities in Afghanistan. Pakistani police and soldiers were killed in fighting in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Unknown people murdered a young man in Jalalabad. Militants of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group are fighting with the Pakistan Army in Mir Ali, North Waziristan.

Afghanistan Content Report: August 3–9, 2024

The Taliban have received funding from the international community and continue to seek to please international donors. The Taliban want friendship and cooperation with Russia, the United States, and China. The Taliban lie about attacks committed against them and seek to suppress the flow of information. Several members of Pakistan's security forces have been killed in different attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Taliban soldiers desecrated a Quran in Kunduz.

Pakistani Shiites have been fighting with Sunnis in Parachinar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Taliban protects Shiites in Afghanistan. Unidentified gunmen attacked United Nations personnel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Taliban members are accused of drug use and sales.

The Taliban want friendship and cooperation with Russia and Iran. Posts accuse Afghan Shiites of killing Sunnis in Syria. The Taliban mimic the U.S. in their raiding of homes and embrace of capitalism. The Taliban have arrested Uyghur fighters in Afghanistan at the request of the Chinese government. The Taliban have arrested 43 people allegedly connected to the murder of a Shiite cleric in Uruzgan province.

The Taliban are trying to improve relations with Russia and China. The Taliban have promised the Shiite community that they will provide security for upcoming Ashura celebrations. Acts of sexual violence committed by the Taliban are widespread, and the perpetrators go unpunished. The Taliban protect foreigners and religious minority groups within Afghanistan but attack Sunni Muslims.

Hazaras have fled Afghanistan because of acts of terrorism targeting their community. A leader of the Pakistani political party Assembly of Islamic Clerics was killed in Waziristan. ISIS claimed the attack.

Afghanistan Content Report: May 25 – June 7, 2024

Taliban officials met with the president of the United Arab Emirates to discuss counterterrorism efforts in Afghanistan. A Taliban member was killed in Bajaur, a Taliban intelligence official was killed in Ghor Province, and attacks in Pakistan resulted in the death of a member of the political party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and a police officer. Russia is moving to delist the Taliban from their list of terrorist organizations.
