Abdifatah Aden was a naturalized U.S. citizen from Somalia who went to Syria to fight for the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria. Aden left for Saudi Arabia in 2013 and then decided to fight for the Nusra Front. After Aden’s death, a “martyrdom photo” showing him lying in bed with a bandaged head began to circulate on Facebook. Al-Nusra Front is al-Qaeda’s formal affiliate in Syria and one of the most powerful rebel groups fighting Assad. The group conducts formal military campaigns, assassinations, hostage missions, and ‘lone wolf’ operations, including al-Qaeda’s trademark suicide bombings.

On March 25, 2017, as Bangladesh Armed Forces raided a militant hideout in South Surma Upazila, Bangladesh, militants detonated two bombs in a crowd of 500-600 onlookers. The attack, claimed by ISIS, killed four civilians and three police officers, and injured 50 others.
