On July 8, 2016, ISIS suicide bombers opened fire on worshipers at a Shiite shrine in Balad, north of Baghdad, before detonating their explosives. Most of the 40 people who were killed were pilgrims visiting the shrine to mark the end of Ramadan.

On July 3, 2016, ISIS terrorists detonated a suicide truck bomb in the mainly Shia district of Karrada in Baghdad. The attack hit a shopping area full of late-night Ramadan shoppers, killing at least 324 people and injuring 223 more.

On July 1, 2015, Boko Haram gunmen stormed the village of Kukawa in Nigeria’s northeast Borno State. The militants targeted mosques they deemed to be too moderate and attacked nearby houses, killing a total of 97 people.
