Dr. Nicolas Stockhammer
Dr. Nicolas Stockhammer is a political scientist specializing in terrorism, violent extremism and international security. He is the Head of the Research Cluster Counter-Terrorism, CVE and Intelligence at the Department of Security Studies, Danube University Krems (Austria), where he leads a multi-thematic research portfolio and international cooperation projects. Since 2017 he is Senior Researcher at the European Institute for Counter Terrorism and Conflict Prevention in Vienna. In October 2025 he assumed a position as Senior Research Fellow at The Soufan Center (New York) and a member of the UN CTED Global Research Network (GRN).
With more than twenty years of academic and policy-oriented experience, Stockhammer has worked at the University of Vienna, the Austrian National Defence Academy and Humboldt University Berlin. He has contributed to research projects with the NATO Centre of Excellence – Defence Against Terrorism (CoE DAT) and the EU Knowledge Hub on the Prevention of Radicalisation, and serves on the Editorial Board of Studies in Conflict & Terrorism. He is also the editor of the Routledge Handbook of Transnational Terrorism.
Stockhammer is a frequent commentator for national and international media, providing approximately 100 expert interviews per year on terrorism trends, extremist ecosystems and hybrid threats. His work operates at the intersection of empirical research, policy advice and public communication.
