On April 3, 2017, the day Vladimir Putin was due to visit the city, a suicide bombing was carried out in the St. Petersburg metro, killing 15 people and injuring 64. An al-Qaeda affiliate, Imam Shamil Battalion, claimed responsibility.
"The logic of this crackdown has been basically that the Taliban is bad—and bad things shouldn’t be on social media because they encourage such behavior. As one of the proponents of that argument, the Counter Extremism Project, a nonprofit, argued in a statement to reporters, the Taliban represents the “'worst of the worst in [online] terrorist material.'"
