On April 3, 2017, the day Vladimir Putin was due to visit the city, a suicide bombing was carried out in the St. Petersburg metro, killing 15 people and injuring 64. An al-Qaeda affiliate, Imam Shamil Battalion, claimed responsibility.

The new solution for online recruiting, appropriately enough, is closely related to the software used to combat child pornography. The endless videos of atrocities online did more than just recruit. They also sparked a major effort to shut them down. The Washington based Counter Extremism Project says its software will do the job.
