CEP Advisor Liam Duffy writes: "We have made very little effort to understand Islamism as distinct political theory and intellectual tradition. But this is exactly what it is: a political theory and not a matter of race or religion. Some adherents are violent, such as the jihadists of Islamic State and al-Qaeda, while others choose other non-violent means to enact their vision but nonetheless pose their own unique challenge to democratic states."
