Indeed, the judgment underlines the point that she had agency – a point often missed by those who argue that she is a victim first and foremost. But the fact remains, our national security is better served by her repatriation to this country, to be charged and tried by her peers."

On April 3, 2017, the day Vladimir Putin was due to visit the city, a suicide bombing was carried out in the St. Petersburg metro, killing 15 people and injuring 64. An al-Qaeda affiliate, Imam Shamil Battalion, claimed responsibility.
