On August 12, 2022, Rushdie was scheduled to lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York. After the attack, police blocked off Matar’s Fairview home. According to Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt, Rushdie’s injuries included three stab wounds to the right side of the front of his neck, four stab wounds to his stomach, a puncture wound to his right eye, a puncture wound to his chest, and a laceration on his right thigh. On February 14, 1989, Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling Rushdie’s novel an insult to Islam. Matar’s Shiite Muslim family is of Lebanese origin from the town of Yaroun, a Hezbollah stronghold. They initially settled in California. Fardos recalled her son had become reclusive, introverted, and more focused on Islam after a 28-day trip to Lebanon to visit his father in 2018. Matar would regularly lock himself in the basement and refuse contact with the rest of his mother and his two 14-year-old twin sisters for months at a time, according to his mother. He also began criticizing his mother for not giving him a stricter Muslim upbringing. In April 2022, Matar joined a local boxing gym for $158 a month for unlimited classes. Matar was initially indicted on August 13, 2022, on charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury with a deadly weapon. Matar pleaded not guilty. The court refused him bail and remanded him to the Chautauqua County Jail.Paul P. During an August 17 interview with the New York Post, Matar admitted he had not read the entirety of The Satanic Verses but said he did not like Rushdie because he had insulted Islam. Matar faced a federal arraignment on July 24, 2024. Federal prosecutors charged him with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization (Hezbollah), engaging in an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries, and providing material support to terrorists. The Department of Justice accused Matar of inspiration from a 2006 speech by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah to carry out the attack. Following jury selection in early February 2025, Matar’s trial in New York state began on February 10, 2025. Matar twice shouted “Free Palestine” as he entered the courtroom. Prosecutors argued that Matar had been motivated by the 1989 fatwa to kill Rushdie. Evidence showed messages from Matar from 2021 and 2022 discussing the fatwa and blaming Rushdie for defaming Islam. In those messages, Matar also said that Rushdie’s continued survival encouraged others to defame Islam. The prosecution accused Matar of planning the attack on Rushdie for months. Those comments echoed a 2006 statement by Nasrallah. In his closing statements, assistant public defender Andrew Brautigan told the jury that prosecutors had not proven that Matar had intended to kill Rushdie. On July 29, 2026, the jury convicted Matar on all charges.
