Andrew Anglin

Andrew Anglin is the American founder of the Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi website named after the Nazi propaganda sheet called Der Stürmer.“Andrew Anglin,” Southern Poverty Law Center, accessed November 13, 2023, https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/andrew-anglin. Based in Columbus, Ohio, the Daily Stormer attempts to reach “all disenfranchised and angry White males under the age of thirty.”“Andrew Anglin: Five Things to Know,” Anti-Defamation League, April 25, 2018, https://www.adl.org/resources/news/andrew-anglin-five-things-know.

Before launching Daily Stormer, Anglin founded a long-form essay website called Total Fascism in 2012. The site is no longer in operation.“Andrew Anglin,” Southern Poverty Law Center, accessed November 13, 2023, https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/andrew-anglin. Anglin officially launched the Daily Stormer on July 4, 2013, hoping to reach an audience of white males between the ages of 10 and 30. Daily Stormer quickly grew a following, and between 2013 and 2017, the website ranked among the 100,000 most-visited websites.“Andrew Anglin,” Southern Poverty Law Center, accessed November 13, 2023, https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/andrew-anglin. The Daily Stormer is formatted similarly to 4chan, an open-forum and message board website often featuring inflammatory topics. Anglin claimed the Daily Stormer was an attempt to have a 4chan board that was “going full-Nazi” and would create a community of white nationalists.“Andrew Anglin,” Southern Poverty Law Center, accessed November 13, 2023, https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/andrew-anglin. By 2016, Anglin capitalized on the popularity of his site and promoted “Daily Stormer Book Clubs,” which saw male white supremacists gather in local groups to engage in white supremacist activity and propaganda as well as train for “the coming race war.”“Daily Stormer Book Club,” Anti-Defamation League, accessed November 13, 2013, https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbol/daily-stormer-book-club. In the years between 2017 and 2021, Anglin received at least $4.8 million in Bitcoin from his supporters.Erika Kinetz and Lori Hinnant, “‘White Dissidents’ Raise Millions in Cryptocurrency,” PBS, September 27, 2021, https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/far-right-extremists-raise-millions-cryptocurrency-bitcoin/.

Anglin’s propensity for offensive language as well as his fabricated accounts got him kicked off Twitter in November 2015 when he tweeted false eyewitness accounts of Ku Klux Klan members during racial justice protests in Missouri.“Andrew Anglin,” Southern Poverty Law Center, accessed November 13, 2023, https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/andrew-anglin. That same year, he further encouraged his followers to promote racist hashtags such as “#GasTheK----,” “#RaceWarNow,” “#OpenBordersForIsrael,” and “#WhiteGenocide,” to gain traction across social media websites like Twitter.“Andrew Anglin,” Southern Poverty Law Center, accessed November 13, 2023, https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/andrew-anglin. On December 2, 2022, Twitter reinstated Anglin’s account following Elon Musk’s amnesty of suspended accounts.Allison Morrow, “Welcome to the ‘free-for-all hellscape’ that is Twitter,” CNN, December 5, 2022, https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/05/business/nightcap-twitter-neo-nazi/index.html. As of November 2023, Anglin’s Twitter account has once again been removed.

Anglin has previously encouraged his supporters to carry out “troll storms” against his opponents. One such intimidation campaign was targeted towards Tanya Gersh, a Jewish real estate agent, and her family. Gersh reportedly led a harassment campaign against Richard Spencer, the white supremacist leader who coined the term “alt-right.” After Anglin posted the Gersh family’s personal details across social media in December 2016, Gersh responded in April 2017 by suing him under Montana’s Anti-Intimidation Act. Anglin was ultimately ordered by a U.S. District judge in July 2019 to pay more than $4 million in damages to the Gersh family.Alex Johnson, “Founder of neo-Nazi site Daily Stormer should pay $14 million to victim of ‘troll storm,’ judge says,” NBC News, July 15, 2019, https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/founder-neo-nazi-site-daily-stormer-should-pay-14-million-n1030211.

Anglin and members of the Daily Stormer have gone so far as to doctor fake tweets to tarnish the reputation of individuals they oppose. In one instance in May 2017, Anglin photoshopped tweets misrepresenting the beliefs of a prominent Muslim American comedian. The fake tweets saw the comedian, Dean Obeidallah, praising the assailant of the Manchester bombing that killed 23 and injured hundreds of others. The tweets endangered Obeidallah and he was bombarded with death threats, after which he sued Anglin for defamation.Eric Heisig, “Here's how The Daily Stormer created fake tweets to destroy a Muslim American comedian's reputation,” Cleveland, August 28, 2017, https://www.cleveland.com/court-justice/2017/08/heres_how_a_lawsuit_says_a_neo.html.

A self-proclaimed internet troll and serial harasser, Anglin’s incendiary comments have resulted in him owing more than $18 million in legal judgments in the United States. To evade payment to his victims, Anglin has been on the run and his whereabouts are still unknown.Erika Kinetz and Lori Hinnant, “‘White Dissidents’ Raise Millions in Cryptocurrency,” PBS, September 27, 2021, https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/far-right-extremists-raise-millions-cryptocurrency-bitcoin/.
