On January 21, 2017, a bomb exploded at a vegetable market in Parachinar, a mainly Shiite area on Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan. At least 25 people were killed and 87 injured in an attack claimed by both Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan splinter group Hakimullah Mehsud.

On January 15, 2016, al-Shabaab militants attacked an African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) base in El Adde, Somalia. It began with a suicide bombing and a battle ensued, leaving at least 143 Kenyan troops dead.

On January 9, 2020, militants on motorbikes and in cars descended upon a military outpost in Chinadograr, Mali, killing 89 soldiers and injuring six others. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
