Kools conducted the March 2003 attack out of resentment, according to a U.S. Army spokesperson. Supervisors previously described Kools as having \u201can attitude problem\u201d and had reprimanded him for insubordination. Kools revealed at trial that he wanted to stop U.S. troops from killing fellow Muslims. He was sentenced to death in 2005. Kools was \u201cindoctrinated in the Nation of Islam\u2019s militant teachings\u201d at a young age, his defense attorneys wrote in a legal brief.
